Very fun tournament, several great opponents. Here is a brief summary of the games: Round 1 (W): Bye from Store Championship Round 2 (W): Jinn/Casian Mill Round 3 (W): Yoda/Leia Mill Round 4 (W): Talzen/DJ Round 5 (L): Vader/Greedo

Semifinals (W, 2-1): Talzen/DJ Finals (W, 2-1): Vader/Greedo

The Yoda/Leia matchup was fairly straightforward. Palpatine excels at dealing damage with minimal upgrades. Don't feel that you have to overload him. My opponent had no removal one round (I think round 2), which allowed a kill on Yoda. Leia soon followed.

Talzen/DJ matchup was rough, but definitely winnable. Extra upgrades improved the deck performance significantly. Early Holocron is very useful. As a general rule, don't roll Palpatine out unless he has a lot of health remaining or several shields. I lost a late game because I rolled out before I played a defense card (force illusion, indomitable). Also, don't hesitate to eliminate their supports with Force Rend.

Vader/Greedo was a rougher matchup than anticipated as well. Holocron into any of the upgrades can allow a turn 1 kill on greedo, which make the rest of the matchup much smoother. Force Illusion, Force Throw, and Force Push were very relevent in this matchup, giving a way to counteract the Vader dice. Also of note is that You Were My Friend can be played offensively OR defensively. Both purposes saw play in this matchup.

Wow.. I was expecting a fast hitting, swiftness, aim or alter build.. Congrats on the win.

Congrats on the win sucks I didn't get to play against it.

May I ask why no inclusion of Rise Again? It seems like with the grinding style it would fit the deck well...

mamonushi 158

It was on the list as a potential include. However, witch magick overall was stronger in this particular deck due to the significantly lower cost. Even with this build, it was rare to save up to 5 resources.

Additionally, the deck wasn't built to capitalize on the grind. The deck was build to hit much faster than that. It could win the grind if necessary, but that wasn't really the intent.

You sir are a legend.

Heyo its the MusicDirector guy again. So im planning on taking this decklist to a regional and ive been training against my teammate who is a decent player and plays a ton of decks. Long story short this list is rolling through Vaders, talzins, vehicles, but when it goes against mill it is falling direly short. It could be that I just didnt Roll well at all(5 games barely two 3sides) But what advice do you have for beating a deck like Yoda/Cassian that has all that fat yellow removal?

My experience with mill is to be very cautious of what upgrades you play. Holocron is incredibly useful early, but loses effectiveness quickly. Mostly, you want damage from your upgrades at this point. The games I played against mill went decidedly in my favor (Leia/Yoda left me with 12 cards left still). According to that opponent, he just had one hand with no removal.

That being said, the more similar match-up was DJ/Talzen, really. That deck runs absurd amounts of removal. Having the additional upgrades helped significantly in the matchup, as they all have damage sides as well. Don't forget your Retribution damage (it adds up quickly). Decide which character to focus and go for them. The 1-of No Mercy may help here as well, as it provides a sudden, often unexpected, kill.

Good luck and let me know how it goes.

I second the, “You sir are a legend.” Thanks for this list. While I liked playing naked palp, it was weird seeing him without upgrades. Now I did add x2 lure of powers, but still wasn’t enough.

What are your thoughts on the new force lighting in convergence. Would you add it to this deck as a 1 or 2 of?

My wife and as don’t play with cards like defend, block etc. so what would would you suggest. Would Stifle be good or do you think you need a more hard hitting removal. There is also a blue card that allows you to look at the top three cards and put them on the top or bottom in any order as a way to force up a Holocron in case the hard mulligan doesn’t cough it up 14-16% of the time(not sure on the exact probability number). Did you ever not draw the Holocron in the opener or hard mulligan in the tournament? What are your wise thoughts my master.

Would you possibly see a place for x1/x2 Resilient in the deck instead of say x1/x2 Force Rend. I love that card from the naked palp days and it is the only thing I really want to keep. I am actually looking forward to getting upgrades back on this Emperor. Or do you think the x2 Force Rends die to the Holocrons are so significantly better it would force this out of meta contention? I imagine the Force tends came in might handy on the force speeds and a lot of the new efficient 1 cost and two cost upgrades like, force jump, energy bow, and the blaster with the silly leia picture, etc? I imagine it was helpful Resistance speeders, Hawks, and other low cost vehicles and droids against aphra so maybe it doesn’t have a space. Any thoughts?

Thanks in advance! Congrats again.

I see why the missing on the Holocron might not be critical. Without Force Speed and the Energy bow you are giving yourself 4 more cards that are significant upgrades round one. The bow as a ramp and the force speed is ...well, the speed. Also by keeping out the expensive force lightning out you are less reliant on the Holocron as well. One thing I forgot to mention is this version of palp would only be played against hero’s so not Vader greedo etc. I just play the wife and we always play the same factions so she is more familiar with the cards.

@General Vatutin While you could go with the changes you're suggesting, the reason I went the direction I did was to give more durability through Witch Magick. As for you questions about the hard mulligan, the deck mulligans more often than most I play. Cards to keep in starting hand were holocron, force speed, and energy bow. Sometimes I would keep something like a force throw in case I got the holocron/I already had the holocron.

The choice of Force Rend was twofold: #1, it has several damage sides that go well with Palp's dice. Secondly, I was anticipating fighting against a vehicle deck and needed a solution. that being said, it was very useful to clear up some cheap supports (streetwise against the DJ/Talzen decks, for example). In fact, if you suspect a vehicle deck, that becomes a card to fish for in your mulligan.

Again, you could aim for the "strongest" upgrades (like the new Force Storm), but you lose Witch Magick and your site, which are two very powerful effects to help you survive.

Wish I could have edited my comments to With instead of “Without” on the fifth sentence from the end with regard to the force speeds and bow. But regardless you did confirm my suspicions that the energy bow & force speed give you so outs (with I never thought to put on palp back in the day—not even the naked palp days) do buy you time. I didn’t even think about the New Force Storm being 4 cost. Some people gamble with Talzin in Dooku decks etc with a couple 2 cards, but you can’t really gamble missing with Witch Magic when you only have one character need that health. That is interesting that you gamble keeping the throw, but it is the most important card upgrade so that makes sense. Thanks for that idea when playing. I would never had done that and many games might not find them until too late. Even if you have to hard cast That one, being a removal and a healing card in essence makes it worth as I think more about it. I personally love infamous, fast hands, C-3PO streetwise, it binds all things etc, so having those F Rends make more and more sense to combat some of the hero decks for the wife. Plus, just the fact that you made it work without Resilient is also proof of concept enough. I did build a lot of hero vehicle decks for her and she has a lot of force speed decks and it binds all things decks as well.

Awesome insights. Thanks for taking the time for a thoughtful response. I really appreciate you making Palp great again.

I have been salty about FF as of late and seeing them give The Emperor some new cloths, some serious tools with the energy bow, I am the Senate, Retribution, and indomitable shows on a few characters they do care about keeping them playable. They knocked it out of the park with his character picture in SOTR so it is nice to keep this guy, this Titan of evil, around longer. Some, not all, of the second attempts at the character don’t look as good as the first attempts. Mace being a good example.

To beat Vader Greedo must have felt soooo satisfying. Not so fast my apprentice!
