Rebeltrooper 964

So this is the deck I took to my store championship which took 1st place. During the tournament I was 3-0 against Poe/Maz with a fourth game that was conceded, I was 1-1 against Vader/Raider decks, 1-0 against Palpatine, and in the semi-finals i was 2-1 against a EPhasma/guavian/trooper deck. This deck was built/designed because one, I wanted to make a competitive Luke deck, and secondly, I took the foundation i built in Awakenings and started playing a lot of games on TTS to figure out how to consistently defeat Poe/Maz and emperor since I anticipated that most of the field this early would be one of these two decks.

Earlier iterations of this deck used far more than 8 upgrades, but I have come to realize with the speed of which this game is currently played that a deck with only 3 dice no matter how powerful Luke's potential rolls are, that you need to have a deck to be more flexible than upgrade oriented. That specifically is the reason why there is 4 situational dice removal cards that I only run 1 of (confidence, misdirection, guard, high ground). The biggest part of consistently winning in my opinion (be it right or wrong) is having a deck that is situationally better than your opponents. My best example of this is that Poe/Maz does what it does right? I think everyone would agree that the deck does a lot of damage has minimal removal and doesn't really care what it's opponent does. It makes it a low skill deck to play because for the most part it's strong consistency plays itself (this is not to say that a great player using that deck doesn't make it an amazing and difficult deck to beat). What I do think is that this deck's flexibility to handle what poe/maz does as well as what Palpatine does, as well as what vader/raider does is exceptional when played correctly.

I've played this deck throughout the TTS league season 2 (knocked out in the round of 16 due to a play mistake I made against a good player who capitalized) but when I played it live during this tournament i realized that when I played the poe maz deck, my deck ran one way, and when I ran into vader raider, it was an entirely different deck, and when I played the EPhasma/guavian/trooper deck, my Eluke deck became something I have never played before (this is not an exaggeration, in the BO3 I lost the first game and was only able to win the next 2 because of the flexibility of the way the deck was built).

During one of the matches against the Phasma deck I won picked my opponents BF and gave luke 2 shields, and throughout the game I played x2 cautions, and return of the jedi for an additional caution, and both rejuvenates on luke giving him a total of 25 hitpoints. No matter how bad you roll, at some point I'm going to hit a 3 side with a vibroknife out and a My ally is the force to drop a quick 6 or what happened more often was a quick 12-14 depending on focus' damage rolls and eliminating their main target or multiple targets. It was merely a matter of time. Other games I was able to blow maz up first turn consistently leaving only poe on the second turn who only got off 1 thermal the first turn with 1 damage on luke and 3 on rey.

This is not to say this deck doesn't have weaknesses because it absolutely does. The Phasma deck game it far more problems than I anticipated, but that may be due to the fact that I prepared this deck to deal with Poe/Maz and emperor exclusively. which it won all its match ups against with only 1 being what I would consider close.

Changes to the deck I will make in the future: Add a return of the jedi (i only ever used it for caution or my ally is the force) Add or subtract 1 makashi training based on local meta, if u plan on seeing a lot of vaders it's ability is strong Add 1 force illusion (also depending on local meta, do u plan on fighting 3/5 poe maz or emp, or 3/5 decks running vibro)

The Last thing I will say is that I play Maz's Castle for 2 reasons. I always pick the enemy's battlefield (even against poe/maz giving them their emperor's throne room... it's really not that big of a deal this deck has cards to handle the burst damage of poe's special and what they play in their deck). Secondly, I only take it playing against Mill (usually ds only since their mill is mostly hand mill). I'll roll out luke or action cheat with rey to roll out my dice, and resolve them ASAP for whatever damage I can get, then claim before they can mill my hand and shuffle 100% of the cards under my deck to protect the 30 cards I have, and I never reroll.

This deck is not perfect, it is perfectly situational and I believe although it has low skill cap moves like roll a luke 3 and play my ally is the force, to efficiently play this deck it will take much practice but it's situational flexibility against many current meta decks makes it MORE than competitive and people haven't played against it! So people don't know how or what to expect, giving an additional advantage.

Anyway, many people asked me to submit my deck, here it is, there is a few changes possible, I'd advise keep the upgrades low, lukes dice plus my ally is the force is more than enough to kill, and don't be afraid to use premonitions on my ally is the force, I got lucky and made a sick play against palp to do 14 damage in 1 turn with 1 vibroknife, 1 owtf with the 3 focus side showing and x2 my ally is the force.

Best of luck!

updated to reflect current changes. I will be trying this deck without premonitions and with either another copy of force misdirection and a makashi training or x2 kenobis journals

Supo 1

I've played your first list for some time and really enjoy it. I don't like premonitions, I'm trying with 2x synchronicity, and -1 one with the force +1makashi training. Your opinion?

lowestlime 1

I was just looking at mine. I'm running one Handcrafted Light Bow. Was just thinking if i wanted to stay with Premonitions also. I was also thinking of playing Journals of Ben Kenobi. I'm still just running one #Force Illusion.

Supo 1

Don't you think that the bow it's too resource intensive? Maybe I'll try the Journals of Ben Kenobi and see what happens

lowestlime 1

Not sure yet going to have to do some testing with it and see. I looking at it as a late game switch so that you have more dice rolling non-modified sides.

So far I'm liking Kenobi's journals, I don't feel like I'm missing too much from premonitions, although I will say my close games feel a little closer, whereas previously when the game went 5 and 6 turns deep, i would always have that huge momentum swinging turn due to premonitions that I'm not getting now. I think yhe long and short of premonitions is that in the games your winning, it doesn't matter, and in those 50/50s where it could go either way. It is the card that takes your coin flip and gives you the umph to end the game. I couldn't give you a % that I increases, but it is and feels like a tangible difference. I'm going to play without it for a few more days, but I think it's going to make its way back in.

After I made the adjustments to mine I played a guy on TTS. He flipped the table turn two when I was fixing to kill Vader off. The alley is the force turn one was great. Hit for 6. The I was going to be doing 8 the next turn.

How'sthe testing going without Premonitions? Have a causal tournament tomorrow night. Think I'm going to test it without it.

Supo 1

I'm trying Synchronicity instead of Premonitions and win almost every game, except Unkar/FN/trooper. What's your strategy in this matchup? Going for FN didn't pay for me

lowestlime 1

@Supo yeah I've tested against that deck a couple of times. I have also struggled to beat it. The best luck I've had is if you can take out the trooper turn one, then hit FN. I still struggled with unkar after that though, but did win.

@Rebeltrooper went 2-2 at a casual tournament last night. Lost to a ePalp and a eUnkar/FN/trooper. The ePalp game could have went either way, just didn't roll the last bit of damage to finish it off. The unkar deck is the one I struggle with. Tried killing off FN right away, but just couldn't get it done there. Killed off the trooper and had FN to one health. Any thoughts on what to do about that deck. Thinking maybe it might be better to go after unkar first.

Just curious, but what do you think about trying to add Trust Your Instincts. It gives you an extra way to reroll lukes die, while giving you card draw. I've been playing this deck and it's been a great inclusion, i also run 1 copy of Flank instead of high ground, which has helped greatly. I also took out One With The Force and replaced them with Lightsaber because i found that people always target luke first and since i never put any upgrades on him, hard casting a One With The Force for 4 was too much. Instead I felt saving a resource by replacing them with sabers and them being redeployed to Rey, helped me close out tight games by giving me that extra damage I needed. I also don't run Premonitions and instead run Journals of Ben Kenobi. Finally I took out Heroism for Willpower, which has helped me not only keep Luke alive, but give me more damage to close out games.

Rebeltrooper 964

@lowestlime I tend to actually go after the trooper first in this matchup although there is no correct answer imo. The reason why, is because of the best defense. If they are going to stop 3-6 damage I want that damage going to fn not to a trooper. Fn has 11, so right about the time u are setting up a fatal blow to fn with my ally is the force, they drop a best defense on you and u end up killing no one that round. I want dice off the table, u can easily kill tropportunity round 1 or round 2 very early. Otherwise the most likely outcome against that deck is u get no kill turn 2 and maybe even turn 3 as well. You put out the same amount of damage in both scenarios, but the 7 hp character is dead and ur on your way through fn, instead of an almost dead fn, and a half dead trooper. It's really tomatoe tamato. That's the approach I've used.

@mongon210 I've tested Kenobi's journals, I don't love it. It's decent for ramping up into something better, the math should work out better than it does tho. I've found the extra actions aren't worth the results, I think most ideally if you are playing journals that you need to play premonitions, especially with feel your instincts, the card draw is over the top taking you theoretically through 14 cards in two turns pretty easy.

I think premonitons needs to be replaced, I'll be replacing owtf for a Lukes saber and a lightsaber. The feel your instincts I'm on the fence for. How is willpower testing for you? I played it in awakenings, but removed it since. I like heroism but understand it not making the cut.

lowestlime 1

@Rebeltrooper yeah that's what basically happened in the game I was playing. Had about 6 on FN then he put Shields on him. I didn't have a knife yet so none of my damage was unblockable. Next turn didn't have enough to kill off FN or the trooper. Have a causal tournament on Thursday night. Going to make a couple adjustments. Think I'm going to add in one light saber.

mongon210 1

I'm not in love with Journals either, but there were a bunch of times that i had force illusions down and milled the other premonition and cried lol. I value saving luke over possibily getting a big play. I just think Premonition is too inconsistent.

I've found that most of the time you're ditching your hand to reroll lukes dice anyway, so Trust your Instincts gives you not only another reroll but draws you another card to reroll again. I've liked it a lot to be honest. The card I'm on the fence with is Use the Force. I like the idea of it, but I hate using that card, then getting the die removed after and wasting a resource. I would recommend putting in one flank. I play against a lot of Poe/Maz, Palp, and Vader Raider and you wouldn't imagine how much Flank is always live for me. I think there was maybe one time i couldn't use it the turn I drew it. Willpower has been great, it's like a rejuvenate but you also deal a damage and it gets under shields. It's won me a few games. It's not that I dislike heroism, I just hate taking any damage if i don't have to. Id rather use those slots for more guaranteed removal like guard or flank.

Have you been playing in any tournaments recently? How have you been doing?

Rebeltrooper 964

-1 force illusion +1 lightsaber -2 over confidence + 1 confidence +1 force misdirection.

Just took a 2nd place in a sc with around 26 players(+/- a few). Beat 3 poe maz and lost to 1 specific poe maz player in swiss and 2 more times in the finals, my only other loss on the day was to a good vader raider player. As far as possible changes, I feel after going through many alterations this is what I will stick with for this deck. -1 confidence for something else is optional.

lowestlime 1

@Rebeltrooper you still running it without Premonitions? What are your thoughts on running Secluded Beach - Scarif instead of Maz's Castle - Takodana? That is what my current build is running. I agree with just one lightsaber, I was running two and it seemed like just too much. Only one force illusion, any reason why? I agree with removing Overconfidence, I also didn't find myself using it more than a reroll for Luke.

aasenb 685

@Rebeltrooper do you mind updating the deck list to reflect what you're currently running? Also I'm curious if you've tried running Close Quarters Assault? I love speed to roll Luke to 3/ 4x hand discard. Can be absolutely brutal.

lowestlime 1

@aasenb I'm running Close Quarters Assault. That is my thought process on it also. Roll out Rey and Luke then have them discard the rest of their hand. You running anything else different then rebeltrooper's.

aasenb 685

@lowestlime I have been doing a lot of experimenting, but probably just suffering from bad dice more than anything else. CQA is one of the main no-brainiers. I haven't been using Premonition but I want to know if Rebeltrooper is back to including it. Tried Kenobi journals but not enough to form an opinion. Wish there was better control for hero blue.

lowestlime 1

@aasenb I'm not running Premonitions. I was running it but took it out for other upgrades and events. I'm currently running 2 lightsabers but think I'm going to cut it down to 1. I also tested running Secluded Beach - Scarif instead of Maz's Castle - Takodana.

aasenb 685

@lowestlime I don't like lightsabers, the damage is too inconsistent. If the purpose is to have redeploy, then might as well just have two OwTF and override. I do think Maz Castle is a must tho. You plan to take their battlefield for the shields, but I think if they run mill you take yours. Mill is good vs Luke.
