Hey guys and gals,

John here from Starkiller Base. This is the deck that I brought to the Hamilton regional on February 3rd, 2018. After all of the hype about Hondo decks, I started testing Poe Hondo as much as I could in my limited time between release and this regional. It was a pretty good deck and had some explosive power, and I was able to beat most decks with it more or less consistently. However, the night before the regional a few friends of mine came down from Montreal to crash at my place and hit the regional. One of them played this deck into my Poe Hondo deck and I got destroyed two games in a row. I was unsure of the Poe Hondo deck anyways, so we put our heads together to improve this one and this is what we came up with.

The first thing you'll notice about the deck is that it's not all in on special chaining. That may or may not be a mistake, I'm not honestly sure. I'll be honest, this was a 3am the night before the tournament special. I hadn't even gotten a game in with it before the tournament. It had been a long week with me being in the hospital for a few days and I had very little time to test any Legacies, so this seemed like as good a deck as any to bring to the regional. I drove out on about 8 hours of sleep for the last 3 days and had a long day ahead of me!

Round 1 bye, I won a couple of store championships, so I used my bye here.

Round 2 vs Obi-Wan Maz

This game started off in a bad way for me, with my opponent winning the choice of battlefield and having 3 shields on each character a few actions into round 1. I mulliganed hard for Lightbows and managed to get one off turn 1 on Obi-wan and left him with 6 damage on him by the end of turn 1. At one point I had Obi-Wan with 2 hps left, meaning that one Lightbow special would drop him. He went down early in round 3 and Maz did not last much long beyond that. Result: Win

Round 3 vs Qui-Gon Yoda

A couple of locals who are brothers both brought this deck, they're both solid players and I got paired up against one of them this round. I was behind but managed to use All In to drop Qui-Gon with 3 upgrades on him and turn the game around. Result: Win

Round 4 vs Boba Phasma

I got paired up against one of my good buddies this round using his pet Boba Phasma deck. He loves it and is quite good at running it, but between his deck not giving him any upgrades the first two turns and Boba's special not being as useful against a deck full of specials, I managed to take this one down. Result: Win

Round 5 vs eKylo2/Battle Droid/Greedo

When I sat down I saw a Battle Droid on top of a stack of cards and got excited that someone had brought a 5 battle droid deck to the tourney! I was a bit disappointed to see that was not the case, but this player's deck was rather original. His deck was built to keep Kylo alive as long as possible and he certainly did just that. I had some luck with his colour calls, but in the end I managed to clear out the little guys and take down Kylo. Result: Win

Round 6 vs Qui-Gon Yoda

This time I got the other brother. Ironically, I used the same All In play that won me the game vs the other deck but this time it fell short by 1 damage and I lost. Result: Loss

Round 7 vs 5 die vehicles

I'm a big fan of vehicles decks and played Hera Maz Rookie throughout most of Empire at War, including going 5-1 with it at PAX. I was happy to see a vehicle deck do well in a regional! This game was close but my opponent had 3PO and a Y-Wing out turn 1 and it was only a matter of time before I ran out of ways to absorb/avoid the damage. His last character had 4 hps left when my last character went down. Result: Loss

Top 8 vs Pondo

I finally found a Hondo deck! Given that my deck had tech in it to beat this pairing I was excited to try it out. I won initiative game 1 and with the use of my plot and battlefield I managed to clean that game up pretty easily. The 2nd game when my opponent had the Throne Room was a tougher game, having less money and to watch the threat of instant Hondo specials. I won game 1, he won game 2, and I took game 3 to move on to the top 4.

Top 4 vs Qui-Gon Yoda

The brothers are back! This is the same brother who beat me in swiss and ended as the king of swiss for the tourney. Game 1 was a rough one, I lost Poe early and managed to keep Aayla alive for a lot longer than I should have, but I lost that one. I switched my first target to Yoda for game 2 and took it down relatively easily. Game 3 went to time with me having 3 or so less damage than my opponent, so I lost on tiebreakers.

All in all I was happy with the finish! If I had some more time to put into the deck I imagine I could have made it run more smoothly.

Stay tuned to Starkiller Base for coverage from the tournament starting soon.
